Blitz Raw Cakes

on
Sunday, 4 September 2016

I finally got to try some raw vegan cakes from Blitz this weekend. The company has a juice bar in Falkirk, and they also sell their cakes at different markets in Edinburgh and Glasgow. I picked these up at the Edinburgh Farmers Market yesterday, and they were definitely worth the wait.

One is cookies and cream and the other is banana and passionfruit. They were both really good, but I'd go with the banana and passionfruit if I had to pick a favourite of the two. They had lots of different kinds of cakes, but quite a few had nuts in them and I'm still not a massive fan anything that's too nutty.

If you're in Falkirk then you should definitely drop by the Blitz Juice Bar in Callendar Square. It's great to see vegan food on sale in Falkirk as there really wasn't much available when I was living there. They regular sell their cakes at different markets too, so keep an eye on their Facebook page to see where you can pick some up.

Edinburgh Vegan Festival

on
Sunday, 21 August 2016

This weekend, it was the Edinburgh Vegan Festival. Having had to queue up for over an hour to get in last year, I made sure I was there early on Saturday to stock up on lots of vegan goodies.

One of the first stalls we came across was Almighty Foods who make raw chocolate and nut butters. I've had quite a few of their chocolate bars before, but this was the first time I tried their nut butter. I don't like a strong nutty flavour especially peanut or hazelnut, but they make a cashew caramello butter which is AMAZING. It tasted so delicious on my porridge this morning. I'm pretty sure the jar will be finished before the month is over.

I knew quite a few of the stalls already like Henderson's, Sgaia's Vegan Mheats, Cool Jerk Vegan, Missy Vegan Cupcake and Affogato, but there were a few stalls I've never seen before like the Naked Bakery. Not only did the Naked Bakery have chocolate brioche, but they also had lots and lots of macarons. I haven't had a macaron since going vegan over two years ago, so this was probably the most exciting food I found. My only regret is that I didn't buy more than two because they were so tasty and I ate them both pretty quickly.

I also visited Shire Snax who make my favourite raw fruit and nut bars. They're like Nakd bars but taste so much better. I've bought all the flavours before, but they had a wanderlust brownie that I hadn't seen before, so I picked one of those up.

The only other thing I bought was a subscription box from The Vegan Kind. I'd heard about these boxes before, but just never signed up. They were selling the latest box for £7 instead of £10 which is such a bargin considering how much is in it. I mainly bought it to try the vegan egg, but I also have a bit of a soft spot for Made In Chelsea, so I wanted to try the new vegan Candy Kitten sweets.

If you want to see a bit more of the festival and more on what I bought, then check out my vlog below -

Vegan Meetup

on
Thursday, 18 August 2016

On Wednesday, I went to my first ever vegan meetup in Edinburgh. I've been watching NaturallyStefanie's YouTube videos for almost a year now, so it was great to finally be able to meet her.

We all met up at Juice Warrior to grab some food before going to the park. If you've not been to Juice Warrior before and live in Edinburgh, then you really need to go. It sells lots of raw juices, cakes, salads and smoothies. I went for the chocolate smoothie bowl which was one of the tastiest things I've ever eaten. I also bought some raw donuts. I never thought I'd pick a raw donut over an actual donut, but these things taste amazing!! They are a little pricey, but they are worth it for a treat now and again.

Once we'd bought lots of food, we walked over to Princes Street Gardens and sat in the sun chatting about all things vegan. I also seemed to surprise everyone by telling them I was 29. I've always looked younger than I am, but I definitely think eating healthy and hardly drinking has contributed to the fact I don't look like I'm approaching 30. I've only recently started getting to know other vegans rather than forcing my meat eating friends to eat vegan food with me. It was really nice to hang out with people who share the same beliefs, and hopefully I'll be able to meet some of them again soon.

I uploaded a quick vlog about the day which you can watch here. It was all done a pretty quickly, but it gives you an idea of what went on.

The Earthlings Experience: Open Your Eyes to the Truth

on
Wednesday, 10 August 2016
Last weekend, I stood in the main shopping street in Edinburgh alongside some of the most passionate people I’ve ever met for my first Earthlings Experience.

If you haven’t heard of the Earthlings Experience, then chances are you may have already seen us. We’re the people standing in the street, often in a circle, with white masks on. We don’t shout or preach about veganism, we just show you footage of animals suffering in slaughterhouses, farms and hatcheries. The footage we use is happening to animals every single day in the UK. I wish I could tell you that these were isolated cases, but the truth is that it’s happening to animals right now as you read this article

My road to veganism began two and a half year ago. I made the decision to stop eating meat when I was around 12 years old, but I had never really given much thought to the egg and dairy industries. I have never drunk cow’s milk or ever understood why people did, and I never really bought or liked eggs either. That’s not to say that I didn’t buy into these industries through other products like cakes and ice cream though. I just never really made the connection that animals in these industries suffer just as much as ones who are killed for their meat.

Once I started to do my research, I couldn’t quite believe what was deemed as normal practise in these industries. Did you know that virtually all male dairy calves are stolen from their mothers within hours of being born? Since only female cows can produce milk, most of the male calves are slaughtered for that veal you tuck into in a fancy restaurant. The female calves might get to live, but they’re not treated as anything other than a milk producing machine. They’re forcefully impregnated which leads to them producing much more milk than they naturally would. This unnatural process leads to lots of dairy cows developing infections and diseases, as well as being kept inside rather than being able to roam around in fields outside.

The egg industry isn’t much better with millions of newborn male chicks killed every year. While the female chicks aren’t, millions are turned into egg producing machines kept in cramp conditions in dark cages. It’s a fate that you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy, yet it seems the majority of people in the UK are quite happy to sit back and let it happen.

Animal activism is something I’ve never really been involved in before. I would happily explain why I was vegan if someone asked me, but I didn’t go out of my way to shout about it. However there comes a point when you realise than not eating meat or wearing animal products is just not enough, and you have to do what you can to raise awareness about how much animals suffer for food and products that we don’t actually need.

I wasn’t really sure what reaction we’d get from people or if they’d even stop, but people came over as soon as we set up. People seemed really curious as to what footage we were showing with some watching for a minute and others for twenty. We saw some parents usher their children away from us, and others let their kids watch for themselves. I saw people with tears in their eyes after watching for only a few seconds and some with their mouths wide open in disbelief at what they were looking at. Of course, there were also a few people who muttered things as they walked past, and one lovely gentleman who stuck his fingers up at some of us.

We might not have turned everyone who stopped into a vegan overnight, but we did something right if people walked away thinking about how much cruelty and suffering went into the steak dinner they sat down to the night before.

What I Eat In A Day - Lanzarote Vlog

on
Sunday, 17 July 2016

I took my camera on holiday last week and in between taking lots of photos, I decided to do a record a daily vlog of all the food I ate. I did find it quite hard to find some good vegan snack food and ended up eating the same breakfast every day, but this day I found a great vegan café for lunch and a vegan burrito at a Mexican restaurant near to where we were staying.

Enjoy!

Eating Out - The Wheelhouse

on
Sunday, 29 May 2016
The Wheelhouse in Falkirk was probably one of my favourite restaurants when I lived through there, and I even went for a graduation meal all those years ago. I've not been back since going vegan, so I wasn't sure how many options would be available. I emailed the restaurant during the week, and got a nice email back outlining what they could offer me. When I arrived today, the waitress went through all the dishes which could be altered so they were vegan, and the kitchen even offered to make me tempura veg for a starter which wasn't on the menu.

I decided to go with the vegetable and black bean enchilada with tomato sauce, jambalaya rice and salad. The original dish comes with cheese on the top, but it's vegan if you order it without any.

So if you're looking for vegan food in Falkirk, then The Wheelhouse is a great place to go.

What I Ate Wednesday - Week 6

on
Wednesday, 10 February 2016
It's Wednesday which means there's only one kind of post I'll be doing today.

Breakfast
I thinking about doing Raw Till 4 this summer, but since it's still freezing in Scotland just now, I really need a warm breakfast. I had my usual cinnamon oats made with almond milk and topped with fruit, seeds and coconut and almond butter. I also made myself a smoothie with just frozen mangos and banana.
Lunch
I didn't take any photos of my lunch because I completely forgot until after I had eaten it, but I just had a bagel with hummus, 2 bananas and then some of this delicious popcorn that I got in my new SourcedBox. If you're intetested, then I'll be posting a review of the box up at the weekend.
Dinner
For dinner I had coconut rice with Sriracha, vegetable spring rolls and some veg. I also had a can of my favourite lemonade. I used to be a HUGE Irn Bru fan, but I've pretty much cut it out since I started drinking around 3 litres of water a day instead. I do still like the odd can of lemonade, but it's no where near as much fizzy juice as I drank before.
Snacks
I only discovered medjool dates a couple of weeks ago. I'd know about them for years, but always assumed I wouldn't like them. Well I couldn't have been more wrong because they have become one of my favourite foods to snack on. I also just put some bananas in the freezer, so I'll be making some ice cream once they've frozen.

Eating Out - Las Iguanas

on
Sunday, 7 February 2016
Okay, so technically Las Iguanas isn't a vegan or even vegetarian restaurant, but they do a specific menu for those of us who don't eat meat. There's nine vegetarian main courses on the menu, and five of them can be adapted so they are suitable for vegans. There's also a wide range of starters and side dishes, and there's puddings on the menu too.

I chose the Chilli Con Verduras which was made with sweet potato, butternut squash and chickpeas with spiced tomatoes, spring onion rice, and pink pickled onion. It's usually served with sourced crème and tortillas, but the dish becomes vegan if they miss them out.

Since they had desserts on the menu that I could eat which is practically unheard of at a restaurant that's not primarily vegan, I had to have one. I went for the Tembleque which was a creamy coconut pudding with mixed berries and mango puree. I think I managed to finish it within about 10 seconds because it was that good.

The restaurant also had some great cocktails, some of which were only £3.90. So if you're vegan and going out for food with non-vegan friends, then Las Iguanas is definitely a good shout for somewhere to eat.

What I Ate Wednesday - Week 1

on
Wednesday, 6 January 2016
In a bid to try and eat cleaner this year, I'm going to start doing What I Ate Wednesday on a regular basis starting this week. I'll try and mix things up a bit and do it on days I'm eating out too, so hopefully I'll be a bit different every time.

Breakfast
Whoever said you can't make vegan waffles has clearly never tried these. I got my waffle maker last year, and it's one of my favourite items in my kitchen, even if I don't use it that much. I topped my cinnamon waffle with banana, agave syrup and mixed seeds. I also had half a litre of water with lemon as I'm attempting to try and drink at least two litres of water each day, so it helps if I can start it first thing.

Lunch
I was still pretty full from breakfast, so I only had a seeded bagel and fruit for lunch. I topped the bagel with my favourite vegan cream cheese from Bute Island.

Dinner
I got the Deliciously Ella book for Christmas, so I thought I would try out her coconut Thai curry which I made with sweet potato, chickpeas and cauliflower. I tired to be healthy by having it with wholegrain rice and not too many popadoms.

Snacks
I got these for Christmas and they're delicious. I first discovered them in a shop in London last year, but my mum managed to pick up this tin and Vegfest Scotland in December.

Blogmas Day 7: Vegfest Scotland

on
Monday, 7 December 2015
Vegfest finally made its way up to Scotland, and I was there on Sunday to stuff my face with pretty much all the vegan food I could find. I'd been following #VegfestScotland on Twitter on Saturday, so I had a good idea of what stalls would be there before I'd even stepped foot in the SECC.

The first stall we came across was Bute Island who had lots of creamy sheeese to sample, and it gave me a chance to finally try the garlic and herb one. The next stall was Fry's Family Foods who had their new rice protein and chia nuggets to try. I only discovered their products last year when I realised I could no longer eat Quorn because it contains egg, but actually Fry's products taste better than Quorn ever did anyway.

We took a look around all the stalls and sampled lots of chocolate including some of my favourites like Crazy4Cocoa  and Almighty Foods, cheese from Vegusto, and Secret Sausages. We also had a look at the information stands and beauty and clothing stalls, before we headed to the Henderson's stand for a big slice of pizza for lunch.

After lunch, we took a walk back around everything so I pick up all the food I wanted to buy. My mum also went off by herself to get me some surprises which I'll be getting for either Christmas or my birthday.

If you want to see all the food I bought, then check back tomorrow for my Vegfest haul.

Blogmas Day 6 - Vegan Christmas Sweets

on
Sunday, 6 December 2015
This Christmas will only be my second since I started following a plant based diet, so I'm still getting used to not being able to eat my way through boxes of Celebrations and bags of chocolate coins in December. Luckily, there's lots of vegan friendly chocolate out there to stuff your face with this festive season, and I've picked out my top 5 for you to have a look at.

1. Booja Booja

I got a box of these as a present when I was leaving my old job, and they were some of the best truffles I've ever tasted. I'm not really a big fan of the ginger or expresso ones, but all the other ones are delicious, especially the champagne ones.

2. Hotel Chocolat

Hotel Chocolat do a range of dark chocolates which are suitable for vegans, but this is one of the more exciting in the range. It's their chocolate & cranberry slab and it's only £3.95.

3. Moo Free Chocolate

Moo Free chocolate is probably the brand of vegan chocolate I eat the most, especially since there's a shop across from my work that sells it. They also make one of the only selection boxes I've come across.

4. Rudolph's Round Up

Round Ups are vegan wagon wheels that taste so much better than original wagon wheels. I only had one for the first time last month, but I managed to pick up a few at Vegfest Scotland today (I'll do a vegan haul in the next post) to last me through Christmas.

5. Caramel Choices

I got these in an Easter Egg this year, and they filled the void left behind the fact I can no longer eat a Cadbury's Caramel. Trust me, they taste just as good!

Radio Forth Awards

on
Tuesday, 24 November 2015
In 2004, I remember going to the Radio Forth Awards in Edinburgh. It was a much smaller event back then, and I was only there to help out with some of the charity aspects of the day. I was also only 17 at the time, and never thought I'd be back there 11 years later as a guest on my own table.

This year's event started with a fantastic three course meal. I'm always sceptical about what the vegan option will be at events like this, since I've been served fruit salad as a starter and dessert at several before. It's almost like people think you won't notice if they serve the same dish on a different plate.

I forgot to take a photo of the starter which was a roasted vegetable and pastry dish, but I did get a photos of my other courses. The main course was a stuffed mushroom served with potatoes and roasted vegetables. It was really nice, even though I don't like anything to do with mushrooms, so that was left in the middle of the plate.

For dessert, I got a some kind of jelly, fruit, and cream dish which not only looked like the dessert everyone else was eating, but it was the first time I've not been served a fruit salad at an event like this.

The awards were presented by Arlene Stewart and Grant Stott, and given out to local people who have done great things and those in the entertainment industry. The Edinburgh Playhouse sponsors the Icon Award which this year went to Travis. We also managed to spot our front cover photo from my Priscilla photocall on the big screen at one point during the show.

And here's a Playhouse team photo from the end of the event when we're all still look relatively fresh!

London Trip: Camden, NFL and vegan cakes

on
Sunday, 11 October 2015
I wanted to get the rest of my London photos up days ago, but I've not had time between work, being off work sick, and wanting to spend most of my time reading Harry Potter.

Aside from my Harry Potter adventures in the post below, the main reason we were down in London was to watch Miami Dolphins play at Wembley Stadium, but I also found some time to visit Cookies and Scream in Camden for lots of vegan cakes.

Happy Galentine's Day

on
Sunday, 15 February 2015
This year, I decided to celebrate Galentine's Day with a trip up to Dundee to spend the weekend with one of my best friends. Since this year was the 28th Valentine's Day without getting a card, I figured it was a good idea to get out of town for the weekend.

On Saturday, we did some shopping so I could buy the unicorn pyjamas I'd been after for a while and headed to Asda to buy some food to make tofu fajitas for dinner. At night I dragged Jenn to the cinema to see 50 Shades of Grey, and it was really, really good. It's not a groundbreaking piece of film, and the sex scenes are pretty tame, but it is a good movie.

On Sunday, we drove to Broughty Ferry for lunch at Gracie's. I picked the Hummus Be Joking wrap which was delicious, and had one of the best sandwich names I've ever heard. After we'd stuffed our faces with healthy food, we walked around Broughty Castle and the beach before I had to jump on the train home.
